SEPA 3/25 M/H/Escort for a 100 Year Old US Navy Seabee

Warriors' Watch has been asked to escort a veteran Seabee from his home to a party in his honor.

Walter Blowitski was born in 1923. He grew up in the Frankford section of Philadelphia with his older sister and his parents, who had immigrated from Ukraine. He graduated from Northeast High School in 1941, the first in his neighborhood to do so, and began working for General Electric. That next year, in 1942, he joined the Navy and entered the Seabees, a construction battalion. This was impressive, as the average age for a Seabee was 35, and Walter was only 20 years old. He was then sent to the naval campaign in the Gilbert Islands in the South Pacific as part of ACORN 13 (Aviation Construction Ordinance Radar Navy). He embodied the Seabees motto of “SEABEES CAN DO” after invading the Japanese island of Apamama and helping construct an air strip in just four days. The following January, he returned to the states and began officer training. After the war, he studied at Cornell University. Unfortunately, due to the untimely death of his father, Walter had to leave the university to take care of his mother and sister back home.

He returned to General Electric where he worked as a Switchgear Specialist for 45 years. In 1949, Walter went out dancing and met the love of his life, Stella. Stella was a registered nurse working at Nazareth Hospital. Walter and Stella got married in 1950, and moved to their first home in Juniata Park. Next, they moved to a single family home in Somerton where Walter still resides today as the only original homeowner left on the block. Walter and Stella would go on to have a total of 5 children and enjoy 71 years of marriage together.

Walter was always involved with his children, his parish, and the community. He supervised CYO events, helped coach swimming, was the parish representative for the boy scouts and spent 27 years volunteering as an usher for Maternity BVM church. During his free time, Walter enjoyed things like stamp collecting and gardening. He is the type of man who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation to help. Aside from the time spent at war and in school, Walter has lived in Philadelphia his whole life. He is a die-hard Eagles and Phillies fan. Although Stella passed away in March of 2021 at the age of 93, he still enjoys spending time with his 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
