On December 19, 2021, John P. Welsh, age 101, passed away peacefully at home. Born and raised in Philadelphia, John graduated from LaSalle College. A veteran of the US Marine Corps, John served honorably during World War II in Bougainville, Guam and at Iwo Jima. He was wounded in action in 1944 and again on March 12, 1945 on Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart. After returning home, John went to work at the Naval Air Development Center (NADC) in Warminster retiring in 1980. John was a longtime member of the PFC Daniel Giordano Marine Corps League Detachment 20 in Stratford, the American Legion Stetser Lamartine in Chews Landing as well as VFW Post 8714 in Glendora. John was also a devout Catholic his entire life. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish and the former, Our Lady of Grace Parish in Somerdale. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council No. 1443 in Haddon Township as well as a 4th degree member of the Bishop Eustace General Assembly.
John was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy. He is lovingly survived by his 5 children, John P. Welsh, Jr., Joanne P. Welsh Carr, Dorothy Irene Welsh Liberatore, James P. Welsh and Timothy P. Welsh; 11 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Monday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 PM at the HEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 9 White Horse Pike, Haddon Heights, NJ and again Tuesday morning from 9:00 - 10:00 AM at St. Lawrence Church (Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish), 135 N. White Horse Pike, Lindenwold, NJ where His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Interment with military honors will follow at Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Marine Corps League PFC Daniel Giordano Detachment 20, 14 Drexel Avenue, Stratford, NJ 08084 or to the Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council No. 1443, 300 W. Crystal Lake Avenue, Haddonfield, NJ 08033. Mr. Welsh's mass will be livestreamed through the parish website make_clickable_callback(MAGIC_URL_WWW, '(', 'www.guadalupeshrinenj.org', '', ' class="postlink"')) by scrolling down to the Streamspot window on the homepage for St. Lawrence Church.
