It is with deep regret that the Audubon Fire Department announces the passing of Chief George Stone. A lifelong resident of Audubon until retiring to Sewell, George joined the Audubon Heavy Rescue in 1960 and was a 1965 graduate of Audubon High School. He joined Defender Fire Company in 1965 and served as the Chief for many years and was also an active trustee. He entered the US Marines Thundering Third Battalion 4th Division from 1966-1969 serving oversees in Vietnam from 1967-1968. After his honorable discharge, he worked for PSE&G in Audubon from 1969-1971 and then for the Borough of Audubon from 1971-1974. Subsequently, he was a fireman at the US Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia from 1975-1998. George was an active fundraiser for numerous organizations including the Multiple Sclerosis Society, St. Jude Children's Hospital, CHOP and an advocate for local, special needs individual, Ronald Mich. Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing Friday morning from 9:30 - 11:00 AM at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 4th Avenue and Kings Highway, Haddon Heights where His Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM following the viewing, Interment with military honors will take place at Bethel Memorial Park, Pennsauken. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Audubon Fire Company, 221 W. Merchant Street, Audubon, NJ 08106.
