Obituary for John J. Gioia Sr. John Joseph Gioia, Sr., age 80, of Pennsville passed away on June 2, 2021. Born in Penns Grove to the late Antonio and Angelina (Silvestri) Gioia, John was a 1960 graduate of Penns Grove High School and served his country in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1962, then serving in the reserve until 1965. John furthered his education at Salem Community College and Brown Tech in Delaware where he served his apprenticeship for pipefitting. He worked as a mechanical supervisor for DuPont Chambers Works for 34 years, retiring in 1994 and also owned and operated a plumbing, heating and air conditioning business for many years.
John was a parishioner of St. James, Queen of Apostles and St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish and was a member of the Mother of Grace Society, the Knights of St. Gabriel, the DuPont Vets and the Washington Club. He loved spending time with family at his home in Avalon at the Jersey Shore. After retirement, he was blessed to be able to travel to the shore and spend time with his grandchildren. John was an extensive traveler, domestic and international, especially to Italy. John went back to Italy several times to his father's hometown and was able to reconnect and maintain relationships with his cousins in Valle San Giovanni.
John is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Helen (Priest) Gioia; his children John Gioia, Jr. and his wife Cynthia of Pennsville, Ann Marie Gioia of Beckett, Michael Gioia and his wife Caroline of Wilmington and Michelle Perciavalle and her husband Bruce of Pennsville; his grandchildren Mia and Gabrielle Gioia, Alexandra and Anthony Perciavalle and Michael, Nicholas, Christopher and Elizabeth Gioia; his sisters Frances Banks and her husband Mike of North Carolina and Janet Blose and her husband Steve of Pennsville; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Marie Cacia and her husband Joseph, Lou Priest and his wife Beverly, Al Priest and his wife Dian and Jim Priest and his wife Catherine; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and his extended family and friends in Italy. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his nephew Joseph Priest and his father and mother in law Louis and Helen Priest.
Services will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2021. There will be a visitation from 10 AM to 12 PM at Adams Funeral Home, 64 Broad Street, Woodstown, NJ 08098. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 1 PM at St. Gabriel the Archangel R. C. Church, 369 Georgetown Road, Carneys Point, NJ 08069. Interment will follow mass at the Salem County Veterans Cemetery.
