Obituary

Irving Elliott, 97, of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey passed away on February 23, 2021 of natural causes. Beloved husband of Willene for 46 years; devoted father of Gary, Phyllis, Susan, Jeffery (Annie), Laura (Jesse) and Ellen (Fred), dear brother of Philip (deceased); cherished grandfather of Jeaniene, Allison (Nate), Pam (Frank), Cheyenne, Samantha (Josh), Christopher, Daniel (Sarah), Amy (David), Adam, Jamie, Elizabeth, Brielle; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Irv was born in Philadelphia, PA to Herman and Pauline Elitsky on November 5, 1923. Irv’s parents died before his high school years ended and he and his brother learned skills, which helped shape their future.

Irv enlisted in the Navy during WWII and served in the Pacific Theater as a gunner in a Naval recon plane.
Branch of Service: Navy
Service Time (when they joined): 1942-45
What do they do in the Service:
Gunner on a Seaplane, a Catalina Patrol Bomber. Known as "The Black Cats", as they patrolled at night, from sun down to sun up. Patrolled for Japanese submarines and convoys. "Cleared the way" for the 7th Fleet to move in. Carried depth charges or torpedoes. Irv was a "waist gunner" on the side of the plane. He was shot down once, in the China Straits, and they were picked up by US torpedo boats.
Their runs were every three days, in between runs Irv taught classes on how to recognize the Japanese planes vs the US planes. He had studied the Japanese planes; their shapes, firepower, etc. He used slide projectors to teach the others what he knew.
Rank:
Gunner, 1st Class
Awards/Ribbons that you know of:
Presidential Unit Citation / 7th Fleet

Irv’s sales prowess took him from taxi driver, milkman, appliance salesman, to executive leadership in an import/export company, where he retired.

Irv played tennis into his 90’s and returned to work selling flooring and carpeting – a job he loved.

Irv was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Moorestown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Veterans Association; the First United Methodist Church of Moorestown or a charity of your choice.

The Elliott family is in the care of the Aloia Funeral Home, 180 Harrison Avenue, Garfield, NJ (973-340-7077). Condolences visit aloiafuneral.com
