BIO for Stephen Mucha

Stephen Mucha, who served as an engineer in the Navy during WWII, will celebrate his 100th birthday on August 29,2021. Steve, a member of American Legion Post 68 Merchantville, has lived in Pennsauken N.J. with his wife, Carol Copper , for more than 40 years.

Born and raised in Carteret, N.J. , the son of immigrants from Czechoslovakia, Steve graduated from Carteret High School, then from the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics in Newark, N.J., in 1942.

His 2 older brothers were already serving in WWII. Paul received a Silver Star saving comrades during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, and John served in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge.

After enlisting in the Navy, Steve worked on a couple of pioneering projects at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, including the tandem rotor helicopter invented by Philadelphian Frank Piasecki and the 3D camera system of Douglas F. Winnek Coffey.

After his service, Steve graduated from Swathmore College and married fellow Swathmore student Shirley Bryan, and they went on to raise four children , Janet, Peter, James and David, mostly in Cherry Hill N.J. Steve had his own company, serving as a manufactures representative, with offices in Cherry Hill, Pennsauken and Merchantville for many years.

A dedicated golfer, Steve wrote a book, “How to Break 100, published by Walker and Co. in 1982.

Sharing a love of music with Carol, a school nurse, they performed as the duo Musical Muses, frequently entertaining groups at nursing homes, especially one in Collingswood. By his count there were 1,729 performances over many years, even into his 90’s. They also read hundreds of books to school children as part of the First Book program.

In 2013, he self-published a second book, “Advice From a 90-Year-Old Man.

Many who met Steve have laughed at his many jokes. He even entertained nurses at area hospitals while recovering from life-threatening maladies.
