Warriors' Watch SEPA was saddened to learn about the death of Sergeant First Class Merlyn Hoppel US ARMY, a long time friend of WWR and Mission BBQ. WWR is proud to have been asked to memorialize this great neighbor with a flag line on July 8th and on July 9th. Our friend will be buried at WCNC on Friday.

Merlyn Hoppel was born in Minersville Pa. in February of 1923 and moved to Philadelphia at a young age. In January 1943, Mr. Hoppel enlisted into the U.S Army and in December of 1944 he went to Camp Hood Texas to attend Tank Destroyer school. Mr. Hoppel was also an aircraft repairman.

After completion of his training he was shipped out to the far east from October 1944 until January 1946. During World War II he was part of the early landings in the Philippines where he took part in the Liberation of the Philippines and then was involved in the battle of Japan. He received the Liberation of Philippines medal, Army of Occupation medal (Japan), and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. After returning from World War II he left the Army for a short period and prior to the Korean war he reenlisted into the Army.

In 1953, he was deployed to Korea to take part in the Korean War until 1954. Once Mr. Hoppel returned from Korea he served two tours in Germany. In September of 1967 until November of 1968 and then again in November of 1969 until November of 1970 he was shipped out to Vietnam. Mr. Hoppel reached the rank of Sergeant First Class prior to his retirement in 1973. During his time in the service he served in Iran as part of a training unit that trained the Iranian military in helicopter repair.

SFC Hoppel was awarded the Bronze star with one Oak Leaf cluster, Vietnam service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Medal with one Oak Leaf cluster, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Air medal, Iranian Crewmember Wings, Army Commendation Medal and seven Good Conduct awards. After his retirement from the Army he worked for Bell helicopter where he returned to Iran and worked for two years. Mr. Hoppel was on the last flight out of Iran prior to the hostages being taken at the United States Embassy.
